Why “two girls and a napkin”?
My friend and I met after being virtually introduced. Our mutual friend thought it was a great idea for us to get together because we were both trying to recover from an abusive relationship. The fear, pain, and anxiety we both felt at the time we met was palpable, even though we had very different experiences. We had so much in common outside of this, mainly our frustration with the availability of resources, lack of understanding of the many faces of domestic violence, and our shared desire to bring visibility of all forms of abuse and help others understand they are not alone.
After a couple of Tito’s and soda, we pulled out a bar napkin and started drawing out what we wanted to do for others (hence the name). The list was long and this website is step one. We hope that people share their stories, poems, artwork, letters, etc on their experiences and feelings. Our prayer is that others recognize their own situations in others’ stories and find help. It took us a long time to realize that we were being abused which made getting out of it even harder. Our hope is that others recognize this before we did through stories and other forms of expression.
We all deserve a happy and fruitful life and no one deserves to be abused.
